Rhodesky ridgeback

Rhodesky ridgeback is currently the only recognized breed originating in South Africa. The original standard was prepared by RF Barnes in Bulawayo (Rhodesia) in 1922 and approved by the South African Kennel Club in 1926. The first two lion dogs were registered on the 18th September 1924 and appointed to Grootdam Given (female) and Grootham Leo (dog).

History of breed

When in the 16th and 17 osidlovali tender century Dutch, French Huguenot and German South Africa, rich in wild game, brought with them from Europe's own working dogs: mastify, dogs, erdelteriery, greyhound and bloodhaundy. Those, however, were unable to overcome the disease or risk of the African bush, and so it was natural that the settlers began to interbreed with indigenous Hottentot dogs and Zulu.

Hottentot migrate earlier to South Africa from the north, where it is driven war or drought. Images of hunting dogs, then, strikingly similar to today's rhodeskemu ridgebackovi, can be seen for example in the Egyptian pyramids, although they were less likely to prick-eared, with a rough coat and stripe around the hair growing back - Ridge.Zulu hunting dogs were more likely to be valuable and not Ridge. Crosses of these breeds were predecessors rhodeskeho ridgebacka, dog nebojacneho, rapid, steady, obratneho, with an excellent sense of smell, able to withstand challenging climate, which could in terms of not only African to survive, but also work.
