Norwegian Forest
Myths and Legends
Staroislandske in the literature we find an interesting book. It is a collection of songs called Edda, which was made in the 13 century and includes lyrics on the theme of Norse mythology. Some texts clearly come from the Viking period and describe the big cats with bushy tails, vysokyma legs and strong claws. Vikings say these impressive cats behave in high esteem. Especially the white.
Traces of this old legend, we find today. The Finnish Lapps still worship the white cat, fishermen from the coast of Norway and the Lofoten Islands of respect never utter the word cat. It is always a beast on the couch.
One of the many Norse sagas vividly describes how the god Tor once tried in vain to lift the Norwegian Forest cat in height. Was too large and heavy.
In connection with cats is often mentioned, blue-eyed blonde goddess of fertility, Freyja. Her car was driven by very massive forest cats. Anyway, this beautiful goddess of his car appeared, there bloomed and sprouted flowers planting. Therefore the inhabitants of the North to build on its modest box bowl with milk and hoping for the favor of the goddess of fertility.
Forest Cat appears even in Norwegian fairy tales. It's such a Scandinavian equivalent of Puss in Boots. Each smart cat with a sweet face and a bushy tail knew that evil trolls tolerate sunlight. When she met an early night, he refrained from his talking until dawn ...
The road to recognition
The origin of the breed is not entirely clear. One theory offers the optionlonghaired cats that were imported from Scandinavia to the Middle East on board the Vikings. Many consider the most probable, that such cats, remotely similar to today's Norwegian forest, occurring in the harsh conditions of the north from time immemorial. Like other animals, as well as semi-captive cats, have been forced to adapt to harsh northern frost. Were equipped with double coats, and a few greasy hair vypadavajicimi pseudonyms, which repel water and very dense, soft undercoat, which served as a perfect body thermoregulation. Perform its function and bushy tail, developed briefs and long tufts of hair between her fingers paw.
The first serious mention of the Norwegian forest cats come from the mid-sixteenth century, when the Danish priest Peter Clausson Friis, who spent most of his life in Norway and asked the local nature, these cats described as a small subspecies of lynx.
Forest cat is gradually moved from forests to farms, and showed a great service here as a defender of agricultural stocks. In the 30th 20th century Norwegian farmers had noticed this cat and gradually found its place even in breeding kennels. World War II interrupted the breeding of the breed and breeding work completely destroyed. Further efforts on the conservation and reproduction of national Norwegian tradition continued and culminated in 1972 to draw up an interim standard of Norwegian club Norske Rasekattenklubbers Riksförbund (NRR).Norsk skogkatt the breed was officially recognized by international organizations FIFe in 1977.
In 1979, specimens were first imported into the U.S. and Germany, to Great Britain in 1980, in France in 1982. North American cat probably felt threatened by the popularity of his Maine Coon and a new breed with long resisted. The U.S. recognized the CFA Norwegian Forest cat up in 1994. The first representative of this breed, today GIC Tilia Novass Cassandra, brought to the Czech Republic, Denmark in 1997, an international judge of cats Ing. Martin, Sandy.
