What is torsion of the stomach and what is a preventive gastropexe?

Torsion of the stomach (stomach turn) is a very serious disease and if it is suspected, you must always be addressed as a life-threatening condition. There is no domestic conservative therapy, and therefore the owner should always be sought as soon as the veterinarian. The clinical condition of the patient is usually dramatically worse and many patients die from dog stomach torsion within a few hours after the onset of the disease. Even with appropriate treatment of dying patients, approximately 25% of complications associated with this disease. The risk of death is always lower in specialized departments able to offer comprehensive surgical and postoperative care.
Torsion of the stomach is often preceded by dilation of stomach (gastric extension). The dilatation of the stomach fills with air and its extension to operate the pressure on other internal organs and the diaphragm, which can cause breathing difficulties. Dilated stomach can also put pressure on major blood vessels and thus prevent the return of blood back to the heart. Dilated stomach can easily rotate around its axis and uskrinout and their blood supply. Once this turn your stomach (gastric torsion), and interrupts the blood supply, the stomach begins to die and the patient's clinical condition is rapidly becoming worse. Dilation and torsion of the stomach is a life-threatening illness, and therefore understand the clinical symptoms, prevention and prompt appropriate therapy helps reduce the risk of death.
It demonstrated a clear link between the incidence of gastric dilatation and torsion of a breed and the dog's body frame. The gastric dilatation and torsion occurs more frequently in large and giant breed dogs with deep and relatively narrow thorax (Great Dane, German Shepherd, hounds, retrievers). Rarely, however, the torsion can occur even in small and miniature breeds of dogs (Dachshund, Yorkshire Terrier). It also demonstrated the genetic influence of depth and width of the chest in dogs. If both parents have a deep and narrow chest, it is very likely that their offspring will have a deep and narrow thorax and the resulting problems. This is the explanation for why in some breeding lines we see a higher incidence of this disease. Studies also show that dogs older than 7 years to more than double the incidence of the disease compared with dogs aged 2-4 years. Also for male dogs occurs gastric dilatation and torsion about twice more frequently than females. The method of feeding influences the development of gastric dilation and torsion in dogs. Dogs fed once a day have a greater risk of torsion than those who are fed several times a day. The disease affects the dog's temperament. Dogs who devour, the more nervous, anxious and are used to run immediately after feeding, have a greater risk of developing this disease.
